Women's Gold Medal Curling Game

The Olympics are over but I still have some posts to put up.

I got a ticket from some friends for the women’s gold medal game in curling on Friday afternoon. So after leaving Atlantic Canada House I made my way out to the Vancouver Olympic Centre where the curling was taking place. It was in the middle of the suburbs. This is the way I described it to Matt and Heather. It was like taking a train (or bus) from downtown St. John’s out to Park Avenue in Mount Pearl, and then getting off and walking to Smallwood Arena (or whatever it’s called now, the one that looks like a tin can). It was in the most un-Olympic area I could imagine. That said, the arena was beautiful on the inside.

I got there about an hour before the game was scheduled to start. I had been through security before at the hockey games, but this one was ridiculous. They essentially took my bag apart. I thought I was going to get stripped searched. Once I got in it was ok. My seat was pretty decent. There were no bad views in the arena. Canada was playing Sweden and both teams came out about a half hour before to warm up. Once the game started it was pretty tense. It was back and forth the entire game. I was sure we were going to see a gold medal but Sweden prevailed. It was tough to watch but I had a great time. I loved all the hockey games I went to but it was nice to see something other than hockey.

I stuck around to watch the medal ceremony and hear the Swedish anthem. It was not the anthem I was hoping to hear but it was a great experience.
