I didn't get close enough for an autograph or better picture. His family was with him and I didn't want to seem crazy. But as luck would have it, as I was walking to the arena for the game, I met someone else who has a pretty big hockey resume:
The greatest coach of all time, Scotty Bowman. I don't know if many people recognized him, but I was not passing up a chance to get my picture taken with a legend. He was pretty good about it. He ended up at the game later too.
The game between Slovakia and Latvia was a blowout, 6-0 Slovaks. But it was very loud in there. Both groups of fans were great. As Damien Cox said, you would swear the game was being played in Riga or Bratislava from all the noise. It was still cool to see. No one should underestimate the Slovaks, they have a great team.
After the game I came back to the apartment and we watched the disappointing short track finals. Oh well. And then we took a walk down to Granville Street, which was extremely busy. I've never seen a city as packed as Vancouver has been the last two nights. I met up with Chris Morcom for a bit too, but I was too tired to stay out late.
Today is going to be an epic day of hockey. Russia-Czech at 12PM, Canada-USA at 4:30PM, and Sweden-Finland at 9PM. Rematches of the gold medal games from the last three Olympics. It might be the best day of hockey ever. It should be amazing. Who knows, maybe I'll try to get a ticket to one?!? Below are a few pictures from yesterday's game. Enjoy and GO CANADA!
